Spectacle Box proudly announces the exhibit of Zachary Schulman's The Community Gardener Portrait Project at it’s pop-up gallery in Wilton, Maine.

Over the past seven years, Schulman has photographed and interviewed over 150 gardeners throughout New York City. The selection of images in this exhibit includes gardeners from 14 different gardens in 11 neighborhoods across all five boroughs. While the portraits are of individuals, each garden is a collective effort, and each portrait stands for the dedication of a group of volunteers working together in a multifaceted web of motivations to build and sustain these spaces.

The Community Gardener Portrait Project exhibit runs August 22nd through August 29th with an opening reception on August 22nd from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Spectacle Box, 3 Goodspeed Street, Wilton, ME 04294

Zachary Schulman is dedicated to crafting images that advance movements for social change, support progressive nonprofits, and boost community based organizations. Prior to becoming a full-time photographer, Zachary spent fourteen years working with community gardeners, progressive nonprofits, and radical groups in New York City. Through this work he learned how to listen carefully, observe fully, and interact with kindness, and brings these skills and experiences to every photographic endeavor.

Zachary’s work is on display at the Museum of the City of New York and has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Democracy Now, ABC News, Vice, The Source, Financial Times, Gothamist, Earth Island Journal, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Town & Country, The Progressive, N+1, e-flux, Thrillist, Hell Gate, NowThis News, Colorlines, Civil Eats, City & State New York, GO Magazine, Religion News Service, JarryMag, and more.
